Sparrow Tattoos: Special Meaning Behind The Sparrow

Most often, sparrow tattoos are worn on the hands or wrists, but can be placed anywhere you prefer. Most are small as the birds themselves are, some perched on a tree branch, some flying through a cloud. There are many possibilities.
A tradition among sailors was to get a sparrow tattoo for every five thousand miles traveled on the ocean. The swallow was another bird used by sailors. There was once a ship named the swallow. This crew through a mutiny and to recognize each other the had a swallow tattooed on their chests.
It has been said that if a sailor spotted a swallow at sea then he knew he was close to land and a swallow would guide him home. If he died at sea it is said the swallow would alight upon his soul and carry him home to heaven.

This tattoo design was a sailors reward for crossing the Equator, and would be placed on either side of the chest. They are also placed on the skin to keep a sailor from drowning. Sparrow tattoos also symbolize a sailors safe return home. A swallow can also mean renewed, fresh beginnings, as one looks forward to a future.
In the movie Pirates Of The Caribbean, Johnny Depp’s character Jack Sparrow inspired fans to have sparrow tattoos as a sign of freedom. Prison inmates would choose this bird for that reason when getting close to being released.
A sparrow represents love as well, and some people get pairs of them. A
sparrow will mate for life, and some couples get matching sparrow tattoos to symbolize their everlasting love for each other and finding their soul mate.
It is interesting to note that some tattoo artists with adorn themselves with a sparrow to draw evil away from their body. They tattoo demons and anti-religious symbols on a regular basis and a sparrow offers them protection.
The sparrow is also mentioned in the Bible, and for this reason some believe they should always be tattooed in pairs.For those who are into Rockabilly, sparrow tattoos are placed on either side of the neck on men and the abdomen on women. If you choose to a tattoo of a sparrow, it can have whatever symbolic meaning you choose.
Some get this bird simply because they like sparrows and other birds. And will have no meaning at all. The choice is yours. You now have a history of the sparrow and it’s symbolic meanings across time.
